Une court de justice trouve «neuf erreurs» dans le film d'Al Gore

Deux Oscars et des manquements à la rigueur scientifique. «La vérité qui dérange», le film militant d?Al Gore a été passé au crible par la justice anglaise. Saisie par le chef d?établissement d?un lycée du Kent qui contestait le contenu du film, la «High Court» de Londres, la plus haute juridiction britannique, a répertorié «neuf erreurs» dans l??uvre à laquelle l?ancien vice-président américain et candidat malheureux à la présidentielle 2000 prêtait sa voix. Neuf vérités dérangeantes qui, selon le juge, ne sont pas totalement validées par la communauté scientifique mondiale.
Et histoire de réparer ces «imprécisions», le film qui sera diffusé dans les collèges d?Angleterre, d?Ecosse et du pays de Galles, devra être accompagné d?un guide étayant les rectifications à apporter au long-métrage. Les professeurs devront mener la contradiction lors des projections pour contrebalancer le point de vue «trop catastrophique» de cette «vérité qui dérange».

Petit tour des principales erreurs qu?aurait commise le nouveau chantre de l?écologie mondiale.
Première assertion qui pose problème selon la «High Court»: l?élévation du niveau de la mer. Sur fond de fonte des glaciers de l?Antarctique et ceux du Groenland, Al Gore affirme que les océans s?élèveront de 6 mètres d?ici 20 ans. Trop alarmiste selon les autorités judiciaires anglaises pour qui ce niveau sera atteint au mieux à la fin du millénaire. De même que le juge doute du lien direct entre le réchauffement climatique et l?ouragan Katrina, la tempête tropicale qui avait ravagé la Nouvelle-Orléans en 2005. « Il n?y aucune donnée scientifique montrant l?évidence de cette thèse.»
La pollution tue «aussi» les coraux
Autre point d?achoppement: la disparition progressive des neiges, anciennement «éternelles», du mont Kilimandjaro (Tanzanie). Il n?y a aucune raison de penser, dit la cour contrairement à Al Gore, que la fonte des neiges est due au réchauffement climatique et aux activités humaines.
Haro aussi sur les ours polaires qui se noient car ils devaient parcourir 96 kilomètres pour trouver de la banquise. La cour rappelle qu?effectivement des scientifiques ont retrouvé les cadavres de quatre ours noyés mais la cause était une tempête, et non la fonte de la banquise.
Le désaccord porte aussi sur la dégradation des ceintures de corail. Le verdict nuance: ce phénomène n?est pas «entièrement» la conséquence de la hausse des températures à la surface du globe. La haute juridiction pointe du doigt la pollution et la pêche «abusive» des réserves de poissons.
Downing Street gêné aux entournures
La décision de la justice londonienne tombe mal pour Downing Street. Elle embarrasse le gouvernement anglais puisque l?idée de montrer le film d?Al Gore aux élèves britanniques vient du ministère de l?éducation. L?objectif initial était d?alerter les collégiens sur les conséquences des rejets de gaz nocifs par les activités industrielles des êtres humains. Un lien de cause à effet que pourtant ne nie pas la «High Court».

British Court Rules 'Inconvenient Truth' Represents 'Partisan Political Views,' Requires School Disclaimer By PR Newswire
CHICAGO, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On October 2, 2007 a British court found Al Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth, to be politically biased, and it ruled teachers must warn students of that bias before showing the film.

"Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth, represents 'partisan political views' and must be treated as such by teachers in British schools, a British High Court judge has indicated.
"The British court was swayed by numerous factual inaccuracies portrayed in the movie. Among them:
-- The film claims global warming is responsible for the gradual retreat of the alpine glacier atop Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro. Scientists have conclusively demonstrated no such link exists.
-- The film presents graphs indicating that fluctuating carbon dioxide levels have always preceded and caused global temperature fluctuations. In fact, temperature changes have always preceded carbon dioxide changes.
-- The film suggests global warming caused Hurricane Katrina. Few hurricane experts believe this, and substantial scientific evidence indicates global warming is having no impact on hurricane frequency or intensity.
-- The film asserts global warming is causing Central Africa's Lake Chad to dry up. In fact, land use practices are causing the drying up of Lake Chad, and Central Africa is in an unusual and prolonged wet period.
-- The film asserts global warming is leading to polar bear deaths by drowning. Yet the only documented drowning deaths occurred due to a freak storm, and polar bear numbers are growing substantially.
-- The film claims global warming threatens to halt the Gulf Stream and initiate a new ice age. The vast majority of scientists who have studied the issue have determined such a scenario is implausible.
-- The film asserts global warming is causing the destruction of coral reefs through bleaching. Scientists have identified other causes for coral bleaching and have additionally noted bleaching is a natural process by which coral continually selects ideal symbiotic algae.
-- The film asserts Greenland is in danger of rapid ice melt that will raise sea levels by 20 feet or more. The scientific consensus is that any foreseeable Greenland ice melt will be gradual and will take centuries to substantially raise sea levels.
-- The film asserts the Antarctic ice shelf is melting. In fact, only a small portion of Antarctica is getting warmer and losing ice mass, while the vast majority of Antarctica is in a prolonged cold spell and is accumulating ice mass.
"Also highlighted in court arguments was Al Gore's admission in Grist Magazine that 'I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it [global warming] is.'
"As a result of the partisan political nature of Gore's film, school teachers will not be allowed to show the movie without telling their students the film is scientifically controversial.
"The British High Court properly recognized that Al Gore's movie is nine parts political propaganda and one part science. Virtually every assertion that Gore makes in the movie has been strongly contradicted by sound science.
"The British court decision should guide teachers in the U.S. to similarly treat Gore's movie as the inaccurate and misleading propaganda tool that it is."
