The agreement - covering the redesign and production - is to be finalised 'in the next few months'.

Earlier this year, Project Kimber signed a memorandum of understanding with Daimler Chrysler AG to purchase the Roadster since Smart last year decided to discontinue production of the Roadster and Roadster-Coupe models as part of a restructuring programme.

Project Kimber is led by corporate troubleshooter David James, who last year failed to keep MG Rover out of Chinese hands.

Also announced today, Nanjing Automobile Group and David James of Project Kimber, have reached an agreement to collaborate on the next phases of activities resulting from the acquisition of the assets of MG Rover Ltd and Powertrain Ltd and in particular the finalisation of the UK strategy.

In conjunction with Nanjings established advisers, Arup Group and China Ventures Ltd, James?s team will work with Nanjing on the development of a range of MG branded sports cars and saloons to be designed and developed for manufacture at Longbridge, Birmingham. Other activities will include the consolidation of the Longbridge site for automobile manufacturing and related activities in conjunction with St. Modwen Plc.

David James said: ?I am delighted I will be at the heart of the development and implementation of a business plan that will produce long term skilled jobs at Longbridge and create a centre of excellence for sports car activities for which the UK is world renowned?

Wang Hong Biao, Vice President Nanjing Automobile Group said:? We are delighted to have such fine British partners to reach our goals. In particular the wide knowledge and experience of David James and his team will complement the skills of ARUP and Nanjing Automobiles?

Alan, a famous member of the MG Forum and long time owner of an MG Midget said:? I am very enthusiastic about the new Midget. It's a moment i have waited for a long time. I have no word to describe my feelings. This car is going to be great. A unique mustard color will be introduced for this special return of the MG Midget?

John Miles, Director of Arup Group said:? We welcome this agreement between Nanjing and Project Kimber. We look forward to deploying our engineering and design skills to help them to bring their vision of an MG car range to fruition?

:mg: :coucou:
