MGC Improvements
Engine Torque and Power, notice torque first.
Leave the engine alone for all early stages of tuning. The most important items are with respect
to breathing, getting the gases in and out with maximum efficiency, with good spark in
between.
A 6 branch exhaust wi›ll give a useful improvement, but add to this a triple carb set-up and
the result is a large increase in torque and low down power, with extra top end of course.
All Cs need a re-timed distributor, reset for modern fuels. The original C distributor set-up
is for 5 star and can be considerably improved on.
EVERY MGC NEEDS TO HAVE A REMAPPED IGNITION SYSTEM, ROSE JOINTED FRONT ANTI
ROLL LINKS; NYLON FRONT ANTI ROLL MOUNTS, GOOD SHOCKS ALL ROUND.
Engine set-ups I have designed and fitted, all have retimed distributor with either points
driving standard coil or spor€ts coil or magnetic trigger driving a sports coil or magnetic
trigger constant energy
1. Ultimate ROAD car using standard TWIN "SU" American inlet manifold with six branch
exhaust.
2. Ultimate ROAD car on standard engine, triple DHLA Dellorto 40mm with equal length
exhausts, six into three into one.
3. GOOD road car - standard engine set-up, triple 1 ?" SU six-branch exhaust, six into two
into one.
4. Mild engine. Good power high torque, always balance if stripped, reworked head, 731 or
⁄ 544-cam profile, DHLA Dellorto 45mm equal length exhausts, six into three into one. Block
may need to be under cut for valve clearances.
5. High power good torque, more work on head, 649-cam profile, or longer duration and lift,
triple Dellorto 48mm and constant, energy ignition. Block may need to be under cut for valve
clearances.
6. High power high torque, more work on head, 3.3lt engine, 649-cam profile, triple Dellorto
48mm and constant energy ignition.
7. All Dellorto set-ups can have six branch exhaust.
‰ Far too many people have fitted reprofiled cams with more lift and increased timing duration
and end up not being happy with the resulting loss of low down torque and poor pick up. The
same can be said of reworked heads, improving the breathing at the loss of performance below
3000 revs is not what most people want.
Extra bits you might need to safeguard the engine:
· 15 or 19 Row oil cooler fitted in standard location
· Radiator - Large core and 4" deeper
· 15lbs cap on expansion tank always a good idea
Ò · Deep sump on overdrive unit
HANDLING
· Good shocks all round, fit uprated valves in rear lever arms are good enough, rear spring
rates increased, i.e. on a CGT fit V8 springs to lower fit upside down top leaves.
· Front, locate front anti-roll bar on nylon blocks and replace anti-roll drop links with rose
jointed ones. Nylotron or urethane bushes all round.
Good tyre choices are 185-70-15,
195-60-15, 185-55-15, 195-55-15, 205-60-15. I have tried all of these combinations and all
give good results.
· Taking rim width to 5.5" or 6" is a good move with any of the above tyre sizes. Using jaguar
wheels in steel or alloy at 6" or 6.5" width gives a cheap wheel change. You can also add a
knock-on adapter to either size. This should give most people a well balanced car.
Any further changes need to be along the lines of what is the handling problem and what to do
to cure it:
· Axle: anti tramp bar system for axle tramp under power and braking, rose jointed.
· Top mounted rear anti-roll bar system, rose jointed.
· Panhard rod system rose jointed
· Anti-roll bar links, rose jointed
· Anti-roll bar mounts, either nylotron or nylon66
· Uprated torsion bars
· Quick rack - high ratio steering rack.
· Up-rated front anti-roll bar. ?", 7/8", 1" - most people never need above ?"
· Latest mod - rose jointed front tie bars, in a bolt on kit used for two years on race cars.
· MGC engine at 3.3 litres - cheap easy power and torque.
· Negative displacement top arms are at last available. Bolt on, lowering either ?" or ?" as per
GTS works cars.
· Essential for long life B, C, V8 gearboxes - 4 bearing mod to laygear and modified layshafts
to suit i.e. extra oilways (Shaft free exchange)
· Engine paint no longer available use light green hammerite it's very near.
· Shorter steering column. Exchange.
· Camshafts re-profiled to requirements exchange 731 544 649-cam grinds catered for.
· Head converted to run lead free
· ESSENTIAL - Distributor reset for modern fuels with points driving standard or sports coil,
giving more power lower down smoother pick-up . Exchange or outright sale.
· Distributor reset for modern fuels. MAGNETIC TRIGGER, driving standard or sports coil,
giving more power lower down, smoother pick-up Exchange or outright.
· Kingpins and swivel assembly - reamed free MGB and MGC
· KENLOWE ELECTRIC FAN MOUNTING SYSTEM AND BRASS TEMPERATURE SWITCH
MOUNT.
Mounts fan direct to radiator and sensor on top tank.
· Rocker shafts, rocker spacers bronze, rocker bushes. Rockers rebushed and matched to shaft.
· NEW 6 branch exhaust three twos into one, CONNECTED TOGETHER IN FIRING ORDER,
EQUAL
LENGTH - MAGIC SYSTEM -which will line up with standard rear system.
· 6 branch exhaust two x three into one - which will line up with standard rear system.
· Big bore rear system, big-bore single rear box.
· Rear anti-tramp bars, rose jointed.
· Rear axle location kits - Panhard Rod Rose Jointed
· ESSENTIAL rose jointed front anti roll bar links.
· ESSENTIAL Nylon anti roll bar blocks (replace rubber ones)
· Front and rear nylotron rear axle bush set.
· SU throttle links for triple and twin set-ups.
· CAM followers Lightened, exchange.
· Gear box overhaul and conversion Manual/Overdrive.
· Steering rack overhaul, high ratio conversion.
I have spares and tools, which would be available on loan FREE to club members against a
LARGE returnable deposit, as I want them back or replaced:
· Steering alignment gauges TRACKING, CAMBER and K.P.I. CASTER.
· COMPLETE CAR ROTATOR FOR MG WILL TAKE CGT five-foot straight lift. Hydraulically
lifted.
· Servo assembly clamp and brake cylinder honing tool
· Rear axle-bending tool to replace diff carriers.
· Slide hammer with adapters to remove half shafts
· 2 Engine trolleys low and high - they will accept engine and gearbox.
· GANTRY for lifting engine and gearbox with ? ton chain hoist.
· Hydraulic engine crane-folding type.
· Engine, sliding lifting bar for "C". Lifting bar for "A" "B" and "C" engines.
· Alternator early and late type, steering rack, s¬tarter motor, radiator, servo, seals in braking
system, master cylinders overhauled, slave cylinders overhauled, rear cylinders overhauled,
hoses, fan belt, disc pads std and competition, rear shoes, water pump.
· Most bits that fail when you do not want them to. Any help with problems, I am here to help
